Living Rich
by Shayne Webber, Ph.D. on 08/17/10
"That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterpise." - Abraham Lincoln.
President Lincoln is absolutely right. Knowing that others have been able to succeed not only means that we can succeed, but means that we have the right to succeed and live richly. If you so decide to be a success in your chosen profession, you will. If you so decide to be rich, you will. This does not happen over night as we may have to retrain our mind and our habits, but with great effort you will gain great results.
"Make good habits and they will make you." - Parks Cousins.
So live rich by developing habits that lead to riches.
The Benefit of Generosity
by Shayne Webber, Ph.D. on 08/12/10
"He who lives only to benefit himself confers on the world a great benefit when he dies." - Tertullian
A strong focus on self interests and the building of self-esteem has had disastrous results in my opinion. If you want to feel good about your self, then help someone in need. If you want to feel even better, do it anonymously. Much of the time our "self-intrests" are damaging to ourselves. You will find out more about your importance, by doing things for those who cannot do for themselves. The benefit of generosity is humility and self-awareness, which is more valuable than any level of puffed up self-esteem.
Take care,

Keeping a Networking Journal
by Shayne Webber, Ph.D. on 07/29/10
If you spend a fair amount of time networking, you will likely find it helpful to keep a journal of contacts and information. I have generally been proficient at organizing and maintaining business cards, but sometimes when going through my cards I could hardly remember meeting the person.
To address this issue, I now keep a Networking Journal. I place the name and contact information in the top left corner and then make notes regarding where we met and what we discussed. This does take time and some commitment to detail, but I have found that it pays dividends to remember small details regarding prior converstions.
On the flip side, what is it like for someone to remember a great deal about you and you not remmeber them at all? This can be uncomfortable, and place you in an akward position. However, if you review your notes often you will remember a great deal about professionals you have met, which will often create more amiable feelings toward you.
Keep your journal handy all the time and complete it soon after introductions and update after subsequent meetings. You will be surprised how much information you will gather and useful your Networking Journal will become.
